The trailer for the long-awaited Avatar sequel has landed, and the underwater scenes look nothing short of amazing.
We’ve been waiting 13 years for James Cameron to bring us a sequel, with some thinking it would never happen. After a teaser trailer in May, we now have a better idea of the storyline and some gorgeous scenes to go with it.
Avatar: The Way of Water is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and finds the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids) fighting a familiar battle to keep their home Pandora safe from outside interference.
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return as Jake and Neytiri, as does Sigourney Weaver – though not as her original character Dr Grace Augustine but as the voice of Jake and Neytiri’s child Kiri. New additions to the cast include Kate Winslet and Jamie Flatters.
The original Avatar broke box office records to become the highest grossing movie in the world. It’ll be interesting to see how the sequel performs. It’s already longer – The Way of Water comes in at three hours and 12 minutes, more than 30 minutes longer than the original!

A third Avatar movie has already been filmed, and a fourth and fifth are in development. Thankfully for us, we won’t have to wait another 13 years between visits to Pandora. Disney will release the third Avatar movie in 2024, followed by the fourth in 2026 and the fifth in 2028.
Avatar: The Way of Water lands in Australian cinemas on December 15 just in time to maybe smash Christmas box office records.
