Two teens arrested over alleged vehicle and property offences

Detectives from the Property Crime Squad have charged two teenagers with a number of property-related offences after officers intercepted an alleged stolen vehicle on Lyons Street on December 17.

A tyre deflation device was successfully deployed by police in Portsmith at around 6.15pm that evening and two of the four alleged occupants taken into custody.

An 18-year-old Edmonton man, an alleged passenger in the vehicle, was arrested after officers from the Tactical Crime Squad and the Dog Squad searched for him after he fled on foot. He was located in nearby Kidston Street and taken into custody.

Detectives charged him with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He was also charged with seven other unrelated alleged offences which included three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of entering a dwelling, stealing, assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence) and breach of a domestic violence order.

The man was denied police bail and appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court. He is scheduled to re-appear in the same court on January 24.

A 13-year-old Whitfield boy, allegedly located at the scene, was arrested and charged with five counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and entering a dwelling. He was refused police bail and has appeared in the Cairns Childrens Court.

The Ford Ranger utility was allegedly stolen from a Cairns North residence on December 16.

Police investigations into the remaining two occupants is ongoing.
