A 22-year-old Cairns man has been charged with multiple property, drug and traffic related offences, following a stolen car joyride.
It’s alleged the man was involved in entering a top floor unit in Girralong Street, Woree via an unlocked security screen, forcing open the front door with a tool, stealing keys for a Toyota Landcruiser and using the keys to steal the Landcruiser at about 2am yesterday.
Police say shortly before 3.20pm yesterday, they spotted the stolen Landcruiser and were preparing to intercept the vehicle, when a member of the public attempted to block the vehicle in traffic with his silver car near a Parramatta Park School.
The stolen vehicle reversed before crashing into the side of the silver car and fled along Mulgrave Road.
A 27-year-old man driving the silver vehicle involved in the crash sustained minor injuries, along with a 14-year-old male passenger.
Both received first aid, whilst a 21-year-old female passenger received medical treatment for non-life threatening injures at Cairns Hospital.
Police investigations identified the alleged stolen white Toyota Landcruiser parked at a unit complex in Earlville.
Cairns Tactical Crime Squad officers attended the unit complex on Ishmael Road and set up cordons before forcing entry to the unit around 5pm yesterday.
As police entered, the 22-year-old allegedly jumped from a third floor balcony onto a rooftop before running on foot, but was arrested a short time later.
It’s further alleged he had possession of a quantity of methylamphetamine and property suspected of being stolen.
He was charged with a total of 22 offences including four counts each of burglary and receiving, six counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, one count each of stealing, fraud, dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlicensed driving, fail to remain at a traffic crash, obstruct police, possess dangerous drug and possess property suspected stolen.
He will face the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
Police also charged a 35-year-old Woree man with one count of possess utensils after he was found in the Earlville unit with drug utensils and was wanted on warrants.
He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
A 16-year-old Manoora boy was also charged with one count of possess property suspected stolen and is due to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court this month.
