Cairns region locals should prepare for isolation

Residents in the Cairns region should prepare for isolation before this afternoon, as Tropical Cyclone Jasper tracks towards the Far North Queensland coast.

The warning comes from the Cairns Local Disaster Management Group, with very strong winds and heavy rain predicted from today.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the system is currently a category 1, sitting around 305 kilometres east of Cairns and moving at a speed of 8 kilometres an hour.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper is forecast to cross the coast as a category 2 system tomorrow at around 1.00pm, between Cooktown and Innisfail, with Port Douglas in the firing line.

Gales with damaging winds of up to 120 kilometres an hour are expected to develop between Cape Flattery and Townsville today.
