Sinead O’Connor’s estate has issued a strong request for former President Donald Trump to stop using her music at his political rallies. The demand comes after O’Connor’s rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” was used at rallies for Trump’s re-election campaign.
In conjunction with Chrysalis Records, her estate released a joint statement expressing their firm objection to the use of O’Connor’s music. They highlighted that O’Connor, who passed away at 56 last July, lived by a moral code of honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards others.
The statement conveyed that O’Connor would have been deeply offended and hurt by the misrepresentation of her work in this manner, especially by someone she referred to as a ‘biblical devil’.
“As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates desist from using her music immediately,” the joint statement declared.
Sinead O’Connor’s cover of Prince’s iconic song propelled her to fame and topped the UK singles chart for weeks. The Dublin-born singer was recognised not only for her music but also for her openness about mental health challenges and her criticism of the Catholic Church. In 2018, she made news by converting to Islam and changing her name.
The call from O’Connor’s estate joins a list of previous demands from different artists asking Trump to refrain from using their music in his campaigns. Prominent musicians like Rihanna, Linkin Park, and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler have publicly expressed their opposition to the use of their music at Trump’s events.
