A 65-year-old truck driver was flown to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition following a single-vehicle truck rollover on the Captain Cook Highway around 5.30pm Monday, November 28.
The crash occurred approximately 1km south of the Cooya Beach turn-off.
Police and emergency services attended the incident scene; the driver had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The heavy combination vehicle was carrying approximately 25000 litres of molasses and was travelling to Cairns. The Captain Cook Highway was closed yesterday afternoon while emergency services attended to the driver and cleared the scene. The highway was re-opened this morning.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Forensic Crash Unit. Investigators will return to the incident scene today; motorists should expect minor delays and some road closures between 8am and 12pm while investigators map the scene and arrange for the removal of the heavy vehicle.
